Prof. Geoffrey Kihara Rurimo – Director Niol

Prof. Geoffrey Kihara Rurimo is the Director of the National Institute for Optics and Lasers (NIOL) at the Multimedia University of Kenya where he conducts research and training in Physics (Optics and Lasers). He authored the research proposal that was funded by the National Research Fund (NRF) for the establishment of NIOL.

He previously served as the pioneer Chairman of the Physics Department at the Multimedia University of Kenya. He has also served as an external examiner in Physics in a number of Universities and as a stakeholder in academic programs development.

Prof. Rurimo holds a First Class Honors BSc Degree in Physics (JKUAT), MSc in Optics and Lasers (University of Adelaide, South Australia), and a PhD in Optics and Lasers (Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, University of Erlangen, Germany). He is an Associate Professor of Physics (Optics and Lasers), and is passionate about the development of Lasers as sources of Light, the interaction of Light with Matter, and applications of Light for the benefit of humanity.

He has published widely in refereed journals and has over 25 years of teaching and research experience at the university level. He consults with the Commission for University Education (CUE), National Research Fund (NRF), and various Universities on the development of academic programs. He is currently a chairperson of Nyandarua County Education Board (CEB) and serves as the Secretary to the Council of Elders (CoE) in CITAM and as an Elder at CITAM Karen.
