The management of Multimedia University of Kenya, top leadership of Langata police stations, and students held a consultative meeting to deliberate on collaborative measures that will bolster security within and outside the university.
Led by the Council Chairman Dr. Abert Kochei, the meeting resolved to ensure that more security measures are put in place around the university, and more specifically, around Bangladesh Slum, which has been seen as a soft spot for perpetrators of criminal activities targeting students.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Kochei said that the management will ensure that there is a pedestrian footpath along Magadi road from the university to Rongai to ensure safety of the students.
“We want to ensure that we have a pavement and more security lights along the perimeter wall,” said the Council Chair adding that they will work with the top leadership of the area police to ensure that there is more presence of security officers around the university.
Dr. Kochei also revealed that the management is engaging Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to ensure that the construction of pavement and marking of the Magadi road; which is currently under expansion, are fast-tracked.
On the same note, OCS Karen Plains Chief Inspector Robert Okoth, who was representing OCPD Langata, Madam Monicah Kimani, said that security can only the achieved through collaborative efforts between the university student body, the management, and the police.
“For us to effectively carry out our mandate; which is protection of life and property, we must collaborate, said Chief Inspector Okoth, adding that they will work hand-in-hand with fellow police officers from Ongata Rongai to ensure that security measures that will be put in place are effective.
His sentiments were also echoed by Langata Base Commander Chief Inspector Domnick Mutune who said that all CCTV cameras that were removed to allow for the expansion of the Magadi road, will be returned.
Chief Inspector Mutume also gave a detailed account of the ongoing investigation into the suspected road accident that killed MMU student Lameck Mwangi. He promised to give regular updates about the ongoing investigation and appealed to the public who may have any information regarding the incident to report to report to the nearest police station.
MMU Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Geoffery Kihara, who was representing Vice Chancellor Prof. Rosebella Maranga, said that the management is committed to ensuring that the university is a secure place for both students and staff.

Samuel Ndunda, Dean of Students Dr. Paul Obonyo, Registrar Administration Dr. Cornelius Mutangili, Ag. Chief Security Officer Mr. Silas Ochieng, incoming and outgoing student leaders.
